Understanding the Sleep Cycle: Why Deep Sleep Matters

At SleepVibe, we’re all about helping you get better, deeper, smarter sleep. But to truly improve your nights (and your days), it helps to understand what’s actually happening while you’re asleep.

What Is the Sleep Cycle?

When you drift off at night, your brain and body don’t just “shut down.” Instead, you move through a series of stages, called the sleep cycle. You’ll go through 3–6 full sleep cycles per night, each lasting around 90 minutes.

These cycles are divided into two types of sleep:

  • NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement): Where most physical restoration happens.

  • REM (Rapid Eye Movement): Where your brain recharges and you dream.

The 4 Stages of Sleep

1. Stage 1 – Light Sleep (NREM)

This is the very beginning — the in-between space where you're just falling asleep. Your breathing slows, your muscles relax, and you might feel that little twitch or jolt as you nod off. It's easy to wake from this stage.

2. Stage 2 – Deeper Light Sleep (NREM)

Your body temperature drops. Heart rate slows. Brain activity starts to regulate. This stage makes up about 50% of your total sleep, and it's when your body begins true rest.

3. Stage 3 – Deep Sleep (NREM)

This is where the real magic happens. Deep sleep is your body’s recovery zone — your muscles repair, your immune system strengthens, and your energy stores are replenished. It’s also the hardest stage to wake from. Ever wake up groggy and disoriented? You were probably pulled out of this stage too early.

4. Stage 4 – REM Sleep

REM sleep is your mental reset. Your brain becomes highly active, dreams occur, and your body goes into a kind of paralysis to keep you safe. During REM, your brain is processing memories, regulating emotions, and organizing information.

Why the Sleep Cycle Matters

The quality of your sleep doesn’t just depend on the number of hours — it’s about how complete your sleep cycles are.

When you wake up feeling exhausted, it’s often because:

  • You didn’t get enough deep or REM sleep

  • You woke up mid-cycle

  • External factors disrupted the natural rhythm of your sleep

That’s where SleepVibe comes in — Sleep Vibe creates a proprietary magnetic field that is close to the natural field of the earth. This is designed to support your body’s natural sleep architecture, helping you spend more time in restorative rest cycles. Users report that after a week of using SleepVibe, their Fitbits report more time spent in Deep Sleep and REM Sleep. Most users also report that they dream more when using SleepVibe.

“Before using SleepVibe, I felt like I wasn’t getting a good night’s sleep. I was sleeping lighter and waking more frequently. I now use it every night and I am sleeping more deeply and remaining asleep longer. I also noticed that I am having more dreams which tells me that I am achieving more REMs. I sleep better, I am more rested and I feel I have more energy during the day.” - Dr. Joe D. Chiropractor
